CoopeTarrazu

Located in San Marcos de Tarrazu, Costa Rica, Coopetarrau is the main coffee growers cooperative in the Tarrazu region.  It was Founded in 1960 and has over 3000 members. Tarrazu is world renown as one of the best coffee growing region in the world. It’s the highest coffee region in Costa Rica, delivers very characteristic coffees that are rich in fruit, spices and floral notes with a high clear acidity and offer a full bodied and balanced cup.

CoopeTarrazu was founded with the objective to help local farmers have a more fair share in coffee commercialization, improve sustainable farming practices and community development. The cooperative has been very successful in achieving all this goals; today the region’s great brand name is in large part of their tireless work. CoopeTarrazu is a staple of the Costa Rican social culture.

Great coffee goes hand in hand with sustainable growing practices. The quality of a harvest is directly proportional to care put to the crop; the Cooperative was quick to realized that in order to produce better coffee that generate higher revenues to their farmers, they had to stimulate first-class farming practices amongst its member. Today that philosophy continues with their Community program, which yields superb micro-lot/estate coffees. This traceable program increase the value of the coffee from the region, has produced amazing coffee, particularly the San Guillermo and Alto San Juan. San Guillermo had the best dry aroma on the table; a rich, buttery, caramel, slightly floral, and the Los Altos had this well refined and delicately sophisticated taste to it.

Under the Community program the superior coffee from the small area in the region gets a premium, but this additional revenues goes back to the community in a form of a benefit for the area in general, like a bridge, new school facilities, etc. The community votes on what they want to spend the added revenue, a progressive philosophy that builds a stronger, tighter and thriving  society.
